Owings Mills, Md. – Jeffrey S. Yablon, candidate for District 11 State Senate, today outlined the choice confronting voters on the main issues of the upcoming election.
“For the past eight years, Bobby Zirkin represented partisan politics at the expense of the District 11 community,” says Jeff Yablon. “I want my neighbors in District 11 to understand the implications of Zirkin’s actions in the state legislature and know they now have a choice for their representation in Annapolis. It’s time for Zirkin to respect the fact that an election is still underway and stop his campaign of assumed victory.
“Zirkin declares he focuses the majority of his attention on education. Still, our children suffer from overcrowded schools as we continue to ask for more schools, smaller classrooms and the one-on-one attention that prepare our children for a successful future.”
According to Jeff, a review of the major issues reveals District 11 deserves representation committed to doing what’s best for the community, not someone reacting to self-interests and partisan directives.
Education
Zirkin abandoned his commitment to allocate budget money for the building of a new middle school in Baltimore County. Instead, Zirkin voted for funding to build an expensive, new office building for the House of Delegates. In addition, at the direction of his party, Zirkin voted to stop state takeover of failing Baltimore City schools. As Baltimore County tax dollars continue to pour money into city schools, Zirkin turns his back on the best interests of District 11 taxpayers and students.
Jeff proposes the introduction of charter schools and construction of new schools to ease overcrowding and provide valuable one-on-one instruction. In order to attain these goals, Jeff plans to support the funding for education initiatives through passing slots legislation.
Energy
During utility deregulation, Zirkin worked to pass legislation which led to a downgrading of the state utilities’ stock rating. This corresponds to higher interests rates that the utilities must pass on to customers. Baltimore County residents will now pay ten years of interest with no ability to opt out.
Under Governor Ehrlich’s plan, which Jeff supports, residents would have the option to opt out and choose the solution best for them. In addition, in effort to address energy concerns, Jeff plans to establish Maryland as a leader in alternative energy and improve the mass transit system.
Taxes
By voting with the party, Zirkin contributed to wasted time and taxpayer money as the legislature voted 37 times to override Governor Ehrlich’s vetoes. On three occasions, the federal district court and the State’s highest court ruled the laws unconstitutional.
Maryland needs a productive legislature committed to improving the state and acting as good stewards of taxpayer money. Jeff takes such stewardship seriously and will fight any efforts to raise sales taxes or income taxes.
Safety
Zirkin also changed his focus from education to juvenile justice for political reasons, while accomplishing little more than criticizing the current system. His plan for group homes throughout the county were opposed by the community, yet Zirkin recently used his work in juvenile justice to support gubernatorial candidate Mayor Martin O’Malley and continue to criticize Governor Ehrlich’s plan.
Jeff will work with Governor Ehrlich to accomplish his plan for juvenile justice. He’ll also work with the Governor and state and local public safety officials to stop the growth of gangs and keep our families safe.
With these and other issues facing District 11 and the State of Maryland, Jeff is committed to open dialogue with the community he hopes to represent.
